Hey Guys!!!

My German heroes!!!

Please let us know when you are going to get the rest of the cams going... I understand that where you are is not like having a shopping mall around the corner for spare parts, but just an estimate as to when we need to begin paying better attention.

Signed,

One sad blonde Adelie

Hello Lin,

thank you for your very nice comment in my little "comment box" on the penguin webcam pages some weeks ago. It is encouraging to get such responses- thank you!

I just made a little entry in my little blog about your page.

Now a small comment to this blog entry: as you might know, the penguin cams do NOT belong to any research project of this german station. Everything that was done until now was done and had to be done in their very rare free time.

And finally there is NO garanty that this penguin cam will be online during the next years. Please expect nothing so you won't be too much disappointed if the transmission of the pics will be stopped one day without comeback.

Despite of the fact that the cams deliver high quality pictures there seems to be not a single biologist all over the world how is interested in a scientific analysis of the material. I've tried to contact many polar institutes but most of them even did not answer with a single sentence. That's a bit strange: at the moment there still is only ONE penguin webcam from the antarctic continent and no scientist seems to have a idea how this pictures might be used as an basic but interesting source of research. That's a bit disappointing for me...

Regards!
Martin

Greetings Martin!!!

Wow... I'm actually chatting with you! This is just awesome, but everything about your work down there is the same--totally wonderful.

Last year, I dreamed of actually formulating a blog around you and your associates. This year, it is reality. And now, to know that no one is interested in the cam for research reasons??? That is totally absurd-well, you already know that. But I never give up. So here's my plan.

I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but I am in the final stages of achieving my PhD in English, but I have a degree in Biology already and I also began a degree in Geology while living in California Guess you can tell I like learning. And it is that love for learning that I want to engage within people everywhere.

I don't think that I've told you where I live, but as I know where you are, you should know, as well. :) I live in Tennessee. Al Gore, the Pulitzer Prize winner for "An Inconvenient Truth," is from Tennessee and has served as Senator here. As a former constituent of his, I feel that it is my duty to inform him of this sad situation regarding the Gentoos. And as an English major, well, I do know how to write a very nice letter. *grins*

One of my mentors is also a Biologist and he knows other biologists, Tennessee is home to the Chattanooga Aquarium where Gentoos and Macaronis are on display. Also, UT at Chattanooga has students who are interested in penguin biology. So you see... I do not intend to stop here. I want to help.

As I am building a website for penguin adoption, I wanted to include your link as well, but the Paypal account is no longer open. If you could get that up and running again, I will do what I can to publicize it. I have two sites already-the first one is well established and the second one is new; both are in the public domain:

Unfortunately, a student's time is often limited, as well, and this weekend, I have to finalize my book for publication (it's a modern translation on a 500 year old text meant for the eyes of Henry V). Also, one of my professors is expecting a paper by tonight. :P I'll get it done-no worries-but it will be next week before I can begin this project in earnest.

Martin, you are doing very important work down there and I do not want you to be discouraged that people have not responded so far to the information that the Gentoos offer. I promise you that I will do what I can for one of my heroes (that's you) and I will keep in touch.

By the way, I also have a great deal of "grabs" I took from the cam last year and if you like, I can send them to you in a zip file. I'm kind of proud of them, as I have made them as sharp as possible. LOL--I even have a picture of my "twins" on my living room wall. It is my dream to visit Antarctica and write a book on the experience... so you see I'm still learning, even at this very moment.

Lastly, my high school Deutsch is a little rusty so please forgive me if this is untranslatable. I just wanted to add a special touch and let you know how deeply I appreciate your sharing of the situation there and by sharing your world with the rest of us:

Danke von der Unterseite meines Herzens
